Description of American Bobtail Cat Breed
Looking at an American Bobtail, will remind you of a wild bobcat. The American Bobtail is a medium-to-large sized athletic cat. The American Bobtail's tail should be clearly visible above the back when the cat is alert and is not to exceed the hock in length. The optimum tail is nearly straight with the slightest of curves. The American Bobtail cat possesses a strong, broad modified wedge-shaped head, with a distinctive brow above large almost almond shaped eyes. The American Bobtails coat appear in both a medium, semi-dense short hair and a medium-length long hair that is resilient and resistant to water. This breed matures slowly taking two to three years to reach full adult maturity.
The American Bobtails have been known for their dog-like personalities being devoted to their owners and make excellent companions to children. American Bobtails can easily adapt to a quiet or busy environment. The average length of their tail is one to four inches, however this is an average, and some tails may be longer or shorter.
The American Bobtail is one of the newest cat breeds to be accepted for registration by Cat Fanciers Association being accepted in 2000.
Pricing on American Bobtail varies from breeder to breeder but generally the pricing on an American Bobtail depends on type, applicable markings and bloodlines.
Typically breeders of all breeds of kittens release their kittens somewhere between twelve and sixteen weeks of age. The reasoning behind keeping a kitten until after twelve weeks is that kittens have had their basic inoculations. This gives them time to develop the physical and social stability needed to make a smooth transition into their new environment. It is never recommended that a breeder release a kitten before twelve weeks of age as the kittens need this time to develop properly. Releasing a kitten prior to twelve weeks of age is against the law in many states. It is also recommended that you keep all pedigreed cats and kittens indoors and that they be spayed or neutered. Cats and kittens of all ages also need suitable surfaces for scratching, such as scratching posts. Scratching is a natural behavior of the cat breed and declawing a cat is not recommended and is not accepted by the Cat Fanciers Association.
